We’re continuing to work through our Zeiss ZX1 review, and have just finalized the studio scene images – here they are! While we’re less impressed with the camera’s JPEG engine, we have to say, in Raw mode, that 35mm F2 lens really shines. Check out the chart’s far corners to see how it compares against other fixed-lens, large sensor cameras.
But regarding the JPEG images, after multiple attempts, what you see here was the best white balance we could get the custom white balance function to give. And, since the camera lacks the option to manually adjust the green/magenta ‘tint’ axis, we had no way of improving on it. This isn’t an issue if you process the DNGs in-camera, of course, as Lightroom provides much more subtle correction tools.
Stay tuned for some more ZX1 review content, coming shortly.

The Zeiss ZX1 was one of the great surprises of Photokina 2018: a full-frame, Android-based compact with a 35mm F2 lens. We got a chance to play with a pre-production example at CP+ and found something unlike any particular camera we’ve encountered before.
The ZX1 is Zeiss’ first ever digital camera, featuring a 37.4MP full-frame sensor and a fixed, 35mm F2 Zeiss Distagon lens. In a first for any camera, Zeiss has teamed up with Adobe to offer Lightroom CC functionality in the camera itself, utilizing its large 4.3″ touchscreen.

The Nikon Z6 II builds on the well-rounded stills and video features of its predecessor, with the addition of dual processors, two card slots and the option to add a full battery grip. It’s a subtle evolution but enough to keep the $2000 Z model competitive.
The SL2-S marks Leica’s entry into the stills/video hybrid market. At this point it’s very much a cheaper SL2, though its future looks bright, as you’ll learn in our initial review.
As a neat little diffuser that has a gigantic impact on the quality of the light from a hotshoe flash unit, the Hähnel Lantern creates a dramatically wide spread of soft illumination.
